No Federal Funds For Burning Plastic at Steel Plants!

The U.S. Department of Energy has proposed a $182.6 million federal loan guarantee from Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funds for a project that includes replacing coking coal in steel plants with plastic waste. The funding would be for a single facility in Erie, Pennsylvania that would process 160,000 tons of plastic waste annually. EPA Proposes Designating Vinyl Chloride as a High-Priority Chemical 40 Years After It Was Declared Cancerous

Only July 24, 2024, in an important step for public health and environmental safety, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed designating vinyl chloride as a high-priority chemical under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), because it may present an unreasonable risk to people and the environment. Along with our allies at Earthjustice and Toxic-Free Future, Beyond Plastics immediately released a report detailing the chemical's harms and recommendations for the EPA to consider during its evaluation. UPDATE FROM NEW YORK STATE

The NYS Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act passed in the State Senate on June 7, 2024 (hurray!) However, the Assembly ran out of time to bring it to the floor before they adjourned. We will take a little time to recover from the end-of-session sprint and then turn our attention to building even more support for this critical bill in the Assembly. We’re deeply thankful for our allies, our legislative champions, Senator Harckham and Assemblymember Deborah Glick, and to all of the amazing grassroots activists and volunteers who’ve called, emailed, tweeted, written letters to the editor, rallied, joined us in the State Capitol, met with their legislators and more. What you’re doing is WORKING and we WILL PASS THIS BILL!
